Denmark 2050 – footnote or lighthouse?

Five challenges must be addressed today to maintain Denmark's strong positions towards 2050. If Danish decision-makers manage to tackle these areas, Denmark will be able to stand just as strong in 25 years as it does today. Today, Denmark has a strong economy and therefore good conditions to navigate through global turmoil. This strong position is a result of the wise decisions made by previous generations. However, as challenges evolve, new wise decisions are needed to maintain Denmark's strong foundation. The world around Denmark has become more unpredictable, the population composition is changing, educational and occupational needs are evolving, and new demands may pressure both public finances and the green transition.

The 16th Small Great Nation report outlines various scenarios for the biggest challenges and Denmark's development towards 2050, and it presents possible solutions on how to maintain a well-functioning and future-proof society.

The challenges include productivity and competitiveness, the future workforce, the declining birth rate, public finances – especially in relation to increased defence spending – and climate change. Additionally, Denmark faces new external risks. One of the report's analyses shows that Denmark is particularly vulnerable to changes in demand from the USA. But regardless of what happens in the USA, it makes sense to tackle the five challenges identified by the report to stand stronger in 2050. Denmark currently has excellent opportunities to provide the next generations with the best conditions for a good life.
