Aiming for autonomy: Denmark & Europe strengthen their foothold
The geopolitical order that took shape after the Cold War is unravelling, reshaping the political landscape across Europe and Denmark. The strategy of fostering peaceful coexistence with Russia through economic integration has failed, as Russia now wages war in Ukraine. Simultaneously, the once-strong alliance with the United States faces challenges, compelling Europe to assume greater responsibility for its own security. Consequently, Denmark and Europe must bolster their independence - militarily, economically, and culturally - as pressures arise on defence, technology, and social cohesion. Despite these challenges, Europe rests on a solid foundation: robust welfare systems, substantial defence manufacturing capabilities, and an ambitious climate agenda that can secure energy independence. With timely political action, there is a strong opportunity to deepen European and Nordic cooperation, enabling Denmark and Europe to stand independently and with greater resilience.
In the 17th edition of Small Great Nation, we focus on the emerging geopolitical reality of 2025 and explore how Denmark and Europe can best prepare for a world order in flux.
The report’s themes are:
· Cohesion under pressure
· Independent Europe – security and supply
· Independent Europe – economy and technology
· Denmark’s alliance strength
